Why can’t you stop craving sugar?

Many of us have a really difficult time giving up the sweets. It’s easy to be addicted because sugar is in so many things, and let’s face it, it tastes good. But I have some solutions that will help you beat these cravings.

  • 1. Watch What You Drink. Sounds crazy, but sometimes sweet cravings are a sign of dehydration. So pound a glass of water, wait 5 minutes and then see if you still have the craving. Also, too much caffeine mimics a blood sugar crash - you’re high for a bit but then you come crashing down and crave...SUGAR, of course

  • 2. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth with Sweet Vegetables, Fruit and Spices. Your tongue has sweet taste buds that demand to be satisfied, so don’t hold out on ‘em! Add naturally sweet foods & spices to your diet like squash, yams, carrots, beets, berries, figs, apples, cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg, and cloves.

  • 3. Get SLEEP. For many of us, this is easier said than done. But if you’re constantly tired, your body is going to look for energy, usually in the form or sugar or caffeine. Power down an hour earlier than usual, and notice how your cravings disappear.

  • 4. Check Your Protein. Fun Fact - The amount of animal protein you ingest can lead to sugar cravings, whether it’s too much or too little. Pay attention to your body to understand when you get cravings. When I work with clients we find just the right sweet spot for protein intake so they feel satisfied.

  • 5. Be Aware of the Low Fat and Fat Free Foods. When food manufacturers take out fat, many times the substitute sugar in its place. Read those labels!!

  • 6. Get Moving! Movement is another kind of food for your body. It relieves stress by releasing endorphins, makes you feel great and look great. When you don’t get enough, the body starts to look for other ways to blow off steam, like binging on Ice Cream.

  • 7. Create New Post-Meal Rituals. If you’re a “dessert after your meal” person, one of things you might love about that is the ritual of it. What are other possibilities for post-meal rituals? Maybe a stretch instead or a post meal walk. Maybe just eat a piece of fruit instead of a dessert.

In conclusion, simply be aware of the way the food industry shoves sugar down our throats. Pay attention to the way sugar makes you feel and the way it affects your body and your mind. Ask yourself, Is it worth it?

Are there any other Sugar Craving Solutions that you can think of? What do you do to mitigate your sugar intake.
